ABC Fairy Doors — Alameda
A walk with great views that also has something to keep the kids entertained as they hunt for Fairy Doors and practice their alphabet!
Made by Devin Grigg and his son, these beautifully painted alphabet doors are trickled about the well-kept path along Bay Farm Island shoreline. It is an out and back walk (unless you have someone pick you up on the other side) and 4 miles round trip. With littles it could be broken up A-N and O-Z. A begins at the end of Adelphian Way just before it turns into Creedon Circle. It’s street parking but it was plentiful. Walk along the path next to the shore and keep an eye out because you’ll quickly find the A door. Look up and down in trees, bushes and stumps. Fairies aren’t particular about where they have their doors, ya know. There was so much to see along the path aside from the colorful doors. Birds, rabbits, dog walkers, bikers, other ABC hunters, planes taking off from OAK, city views, the cargo ships in the bay, a neat climbing ladder, a cement bow of a ship, a platform deck, a driftwood "sculpture", the beautiful flowers in the homes along the path are just some of the amazing things to take in while exploring. Look for bathrooms at letters J and T. If you decide to walk Z-A you’ll want to start at the Veterans Memorial Pier on Veterans Court (but you’d have to look behind you to find most of the doors as it’s intended to be alphabetical).
Every so often there will be grassy area sections of Shoreline Park that make perfect picnic spots!
If you think a door is missing reach out to Devin in the Alameda Island Fairy Doors Facebook group. They’ll either hint at its location or replace it if gone. They quickly replace it for future hunters!
Tip: U and V were harder to spot so keep an extra close eye there. It can be very breezy so bring layers.
The walk is bike and stroller-friendly.
